Christians in the Middle East are having this symbol placed on their houses to mark them for assault by terrorists. It is the Arabic letter ‘N’ and is pronounced like “noon”. Nasarani means “Nazarene”. It is a reference to Christ Jesus our Lord because he was a Nazarene.
This is an example of a Christian house that has been marked. Although the symbol looks like a one eyed smiley face nothing could be farther from it. It is used to mark those who are followers of Christ so that harassment, physical harm or even death can be brought to their doorsteps.
Arab Christians have started fighting back by reclaiming the symbol for themselves. They have taken to social media with movements like #WeAreN
